Meet Kayleigh Malone, Hertfordshire Scouts County Youth Commissioner

fionacannon

We are delighted to introduce you to Kayleigh Malone, Hertfordshire Scouts County Youth

Commissioner.

Kayleigh has been in post for just under 6 months where she has been meeting teams from around the County and starting to put her plans into action.

We caught up with Kayleigh to get to know a little more about her.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 25 and from Ireland and Studied Paramedic Science at the University of Hertfordshire and this is how I got back into scouting while I was at university.

What is your scouting background?

Scouting is in my DNA, both of my parents were leaders and as a result I grew up in Scouting Ireland. When I move to the UK I joined my local group, 3rd Hatfield Air Scouts, where I have been the scout leader for just over 4 years. I am part of an amazing team that runs the young leader's scheme in Mid Herts.

What of County Youth Commissioner entail?

Well, I am responsible for promoting Youth Shaped Scouting and empowering others to get involved. I support other volunteers to incorporate what young people want to do to and how they want to Scout into the day to day running of Scouts locally and at a county level. While giving young people opportunities to feedback on their lived scouting experience.

What motivated you to want to apply for the role?

I wanted to become County Youth Commissioner as I know how much having a Youth Shaped Scouting experience can improve young people's time within scouting but also help them grow more when they have extra responsibility. Knowing this I wanted to get into a role that Youth Shape Scouting can have a bigger platform within Hertfordshire Scouts and giving young people access to new opportunities.

What are the top 3 things you want to achieve in the role?

I want to have a successful county launch of You Shape award, to create more spaces for young people to feedback, ensure that decisions made at the county level have young people at the heart of them.

Camp breakfast! What’s your favourite?

My favourite camp breakfast has to be a Fry up, it keeps you warm, is tasty and anyone can cook it!

The best camp you have ever been on?

It would have to the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden, where I had the amazing opportunity to attend as a participant and met people from all around the world. Getting to do activities that I would never have imagined and experiences I will never forget.

Tea or Coffee (and how do you take it?)

BOTH! Tea is strong with a good drop of milk (oat milk), coffee is 2 coffee 2 sugar and a good drop of milk.

Your favourite scout memory

It was when our scout group went to Wales when I was a cub, we went to the local climbing centre. This was my worst nightmare at the time as I was petrified of heights. However this is still my favourite memory as I not only manage to over come my fear height but I also managed to climb a 50 foot climbing wall!

Tell us a little-known fact about yourself

Not many people know this but I was the first female cubs in the history of the 1st and 4th Clare!

If you could meet anyone from the past or present and have a sit down around the campfire with them, who would it be?

The person I would most like to sit down with at a campfire is Malala Yousafzai. Having read her book she is honestly an inspiration; I would love to sit down and find out what makes her tick.

Proudest moment in scouting

Receiving my wood beads in 2019

What's the highest award you have received and what was it for?

Currently, it would be my wood beads, but I am on my way to getting my Queen's Scout Award.

Favourite campfire song

It would have to be 'Hi My Name is Joe' it is the song I lead at any opportunity that I get!

You will be seeing a lot more of Kayleigh over the coming months and we are excited to see what she will be delivering over the coming months.
